Established in 1977, Roger Genser - The Prints and the Pauper is celebrating its 45th year as a purveyor of works on paper. We are proud to have been an early member of the International Fine Print Dealers Association, accepted into this peer judged organization in 1990. Roger Genser served as a member of its Board of Directors for 6 years.

Currently a Board member and Vice President of the American Historical Print Collectors Society and recently chosen to be a member of the prestigious American Antiquarian Society. Previously an 11 year member of the City of Santa Monica Arts Commission serving as chair for 2 years. Currently Chair of the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission.

A general fine print dealer covering 500 years of prints, from Old Masters to Modern American and European. We specialize in Color Woodcuts, Modernism, Mexican Masters, Important American Historical Prints as well as American and British Political Caricature. Early and Important American Maps are of great interest. California Fine and Historical prints are also a specialty as well as 19th c. American photography

EDVARD MUNCH (1863 – 1944) GARDEN IN SNOW, II 1913 (WO 467: Sch. 418)

Woodcut, 13 ½” x 16 7/8” signed in pencil.
Generally very good condition. Irregular sheet of simili-japan paper. 17 ½ x 21 ½”. Left sheet edge trimmed at an angle. Mlnor line of mat burn lower margin below signature. A partial number 78/16 at lower left sheet corner. ½” fold line along lower sheet edge and a couple associated small edge tears. Annotated: Sch 418 (Shiefler) & B4797 on a verso that is in very good condition save for tape remains along top sheet edge. Strong embossing visible on recto and verso.

VERY RARE! Only a couple of variant examples cited. Has not appeared at auction in 40 years. Falls in line with 2 other similar compositions from 1913: (Schiefler 416 and WO 468 (not in Sch.) $32,500

DIEGO RIVERA (1886 – 1957) AUTORETRATO / SELF PORTRAIT, 1930

Lithograph. signed and numbered 14/100 by the artist in pencil. Image 15 x 11 ¼”. Full sheet 20 1/8 x 15” with deckle edges on all four sides. Very good condition save for an expertly repaired vertical tear at top of sheet and a small blue ink smudge on the verso.
Rivera’s lithographs are scarce. He only produced 10. They were all published by Weyhe Gallery, NY, then led by Carl Zigrosser. Five were published in 1930 and five in 1932. This example is 1930. Beginning in 1930 Rivera produced a series of monumental mural work in the United States from San Francisco to Detroit to New York. It culminated in his legendary Rockefeller Center Mural that was destroyed by Rockefeller in 1933 because of its political content. $12,000

Etching with original color with publishing line 'Js Gillray del. & ft/ Pubd June 12th 1802, by H. Humphrey St James's Street.' Published by Hannah Humphrey. 9 7/8” x 13 ¾, sheet 12 x 16 ¾” Some water staining at the left and top margins, causing some migration of the colors into the left margin. ONE OF THE CLASSIC MEDICAL PRINTS.

Color Woodcut in the single block Provincetown method. Signed and titled and with an annotation “Wood Block Print “Star Phlox” 280 no. from all blocks, 1 no. from this block - Blanche Lazzell, Provincetown, Mass. September 20, 1930” Several other similar annotations. Block 14 x 12 inches. Full margins with deckle edges. On a tan paper with very slight darkening around the image. Printers crease in the left margin to the borderline. An impression on back cover of the Barbara Shapiro’s Lazzell catalog "Blanche Lazzell and the Color Woodcut" Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 2002.

AMERICAN REVOLUTION - (Attributed to Richard Brookshaw), JOHN PAUL JONES Commander of a Squadron in the Service of THE THIRTEEN UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA, 1779 (Creswell LC132: Chaloner Smith, Page 1735, no 97)

Mezzotint, plate 14 x 10”, sheet 18 x 13 1/8”. Wide margins in very good condition save for some scattered soiling. Important period portrait of John Paul Jones (1747-1792). Jones is a celebrated hero of the American Revolution and considered to be the father of the American Navy, His declaration “I have not yet begun to fight” is one of the most important quotes in American history. The battle and victory over Captain Pearson of the Serapis in background.
