Details
The exhibition considers the career of British artist Gordon House (1932–2004) through a focused survey of the artist’s screenprints, etchings, and lithographs. Breaking the boundaries between design and fine art compelled House to collaborate with artists—including Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton—when producing album covers for The Beatles. The artist’s diligence in perfecting tight apertures, or a dense design in typesetting, lead to a lifetime of experimentation in printmaking. A key group of prints will be on display in New York City for the first time, along with screenprints produced at the Kelpra Studio, London, that reveal the artist’s pivotal role initiating Chris Prater’s enthusiasm for fine art screenprinting in the Sixties. Expanding upon the concept of the screen or matrix, House’s radical artistic practice involved manipulation of imagery from such disparate sources as a Charles Rennie Mackintosh chair, the grooves of a record or computer circuit boards, to present complex abstract compositions embedded with colour.
A catalogue raisonné of Gordon House’s complete prints will be published in the coming months, if you would like to pre-order a copy please contact Georgie Gerrish of Gerrish Fine Art at georgiegerrish@gmail.com
