Powerhouse Arts reimagined a 117 year old power station in Gowanus, Brooklyn, with Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with PBDW Architects to design a new art center that meets the multidisciplinary needs of the contemporary arts ecosystem.
Powerhouse Arts (PHA) is a not-for-profit arts organization committed to creative expression. Located in what was originally the Brooklyn Rapid Power Station in Gowanus, Brooklyn, PHA was established in 2016 to become a purpose-built facility dedicated to a range of artistic practices and community collaboration. The building was reimagined by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with PBDW Architects to house fabrication shops for public art fabrication, ceramics, metals, and printmaking, with more workshop models to be developed in time.
Luther Davis is the Master Printer and Director of the Powerhouse Arts Print Program. Luther teaches printmaking at Parsons School of Design and The Cooper Union. He was the co-founder of Fourth Estate, a fine art publisher focused on producing limited editions with emerging artists, and from 1999-2016 he was the Master Printer and Director of Axelle Editions, a fine art print atelier specializing in screen printing that produced over 300 editions a year with more than 100 artists.
